Using special dyes, an image can be transferred to an item using heat.  This is more than a simple heat transfer.  The image is not applied to the surface of the item.  When the ink and the article is heated, the pores of the article expand and the ink becomes a gas and goes into the item.  The pores close when it cools and the ink becomes part of the article.
